Canton’s Allison Schmitt came a slim 1/10th of a second short of a second spot on the US team for RIO in the 100-meter Freestyle finals in Omaha, Neb. Friday night at USA Swimming’s Olympic Team Trials.
Sixth at 50 meters, Schmitt closed with a burst, but finished 5th, edged out of the final slot on the 400 Free Relay by Lia Neal.
Schmitt finished in 53.87, just under 6/10ths off the winning pace set by Abbey Weitzeil.
Schmitt has already secured an Olympic team spot on the 800 Free Relay.
Annie Lazor, of Beverly Hill, was 7th in the 200 Breaststroke final. Lazor was 4th at the halfway mark, but faded to finish in 2:27.48, just under 3 ½ seconds off the winning pace.
Ann Arbor’s Emily Brunemann finished 20th in the 800 Free prelims Friday morning in 8:44.88.
Michigan hopefuls Courtney Bartholomew of Holland and Gabby DeLoof from Grosse Point did not swim in Friday’s 200 Backstroke prelims.
Ali DeLoof and Catie DeLoof of Grosse Pointe are expected to swim for a spot in tonight’s 50 Free semis in this morning’s prelims.
