Port Huron’s Mackenzie Shell was 5th in the pole vault and Annie Fuller from Manistee was 5th in the 1500-meter run Sunday at USA Track & Field’s Junior Outdoor National Championships in Clovis, Calif.
Shell, a 3-time MHSAA state pole vault champion who is now a freshman at Oklahoma University, passed on the first three heights then cleared 13-3½ on her third attempt.
She missed all three tries at 13-7 ¼ to finish fifth. Shell holds the OU outdoor record of 14-5½.
A 3-time state champ in the 1600, Fuller finished 3rd in her preliminary heat on Friday. The 2015 Ms. Michigan Track & Field, Fuller is a freshman at Michigan State.
Fuller used a mid-race surge to reach the leaders in Sunday’s final, but dropped off the pace in the closing laps to finish in 4:28.33, just over 11 seconds off pro Alexa Efraimson’s winning time of 4:16.75.
