Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine vet Vanessa Cook singed the bike and scorched the second run to finish third among women 45-59 at the ITU Duathlon Age Group World Championships Sunday in Aviles, Spain.logo

Cook came off the opening 10k run in fifth, 4:04 behind early leader Wendy Nichols of Great Britain, then rocketed through the 41.4k bike leg and final 5k run to land a thin 2 seconds out of second place.

Cook’s 2 1/2  laps (1:12:12) on the twisting, rolling bike course through the historic city on Spain’s northern coast was the day’s second fastest behind world champion Annette Corydon of Denmark’s 1:10:06.

Cook sped through the pancake flat finishing 5k nearly a minute faster than Nichols but could not quite catch the silver medalist.
